Neolithic 6000-3200 BCE
This period saw humans begin to settle in fixed communities and begin to fish and farm in a more structured way. There is evidence of the tools and jewellery that these people made, as well as trade connections with other areas on the Arabian Peninsula. The final 800 years of this period became very dry and some areas were abandoned.
Bronze Age 3200-1300BCE
This period can be broken down into the Hafeet period, famous for the domed tombs near Al Ain, the Umm Al Nar period, which saw trade with ancient Sumer and Harappa in the Indus Valley, and the Wadi Suq period, in which farming and metal working became more sophisticated.
Iron Age 1300-300BCE
The Iron Age in the UAE included the invention of the falaj irrigation system and the domestication of camels. Iron Age weapons have been found, such as swords and daggers.
Mleiha Period 300BCE-630 CE
This period is named after an important fort, which was connected to the major coastal port of Ed Dur. Ed Dur was the gateway for trade with distant places such as Rome and East Africa, while Mleiha supplied food products not available at the coastal site. Archaeological evidence, such as coins, show the connections between the sites.
Early Islamic Era 630-1498 CE
The region began to convert to Islam following visits from envoys of Muhammad (PBUH) in 632. An important battle was won at Dibba during the Ridda Wars, which helped Islam to spread in the Arabian Peninsula. Trade with countries such as China developed and an important port was built at Julfar in Ras Al Khaimah.
Portuguese Era 1498-1622 CE
Pearling became the a crucial part of the economy along the coast and the work involved thousands of ships. The Portuguese conquered the island of Hormuz and took over the kingdom there. This allowed them to control trade passing through the Arabian Gulf.
Dutch Era 1622-1750 CE
After the Portuguese lost control of Hormuz in 1622, the Dutch became the main trading power in the Arabian Gulf because of successful agreements with Shah Abbas I of Persia. There was increasing rivally between the Dutch and the English in this period.
British Era 1720-1820 CE
After Dutch control over trade in the Arabian Gulf declined, the British became the dominant power controlling trade. They had to contend with sustained piracy from the Al Qasimi tribe, which lead to Britain's Persian Gulf campaigns in 1809 and 1819. Many towns and forts, such as Dhayah Fort were attacked and defeated.
Trucial States 1820-1971 CE
The General Maritime Treaty of 1820 created a truce betwen Britain and Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah, which became known as the Trucial States. This was followed by the Perpetual Maritime Truce in 1853. The British created the Trucial States Council in 1952, when Fujairah was recognised as another Trucial State.
Oil Discovery in Abu Dhabi 1958
Abu Dhabi began drilling for oil at Shuweihat in 1956 but this first attempt was unsuccessful. A new attempt in 1958 at Umm Shaif near Das Island found the first productive oil well.
Abu Dhabi–Dubai Union 18th Feb 1968
Following the British decision to withdraw from the Arabian Gulf, Sheikh Zayed of Abu Dhabi and Sheikh Rashid of Dubai met in Argoub El Sedirah on 18th February 1968 and agreed to form a union.
Six emirates united to form the United Arab Emirates. 2nd Dec 1971
On 2nd December 1971, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, Ajman and Fujairah signed a treaty to become the United Arab Emirates.
Ras Al Khaimah joined the UAE 10th Feb 1972
Although the ruler of Ras Al Khaimah was present at the signing of the union on 2nd December, they only joined the union on 10th February 1972.
UAE co-founded the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) 1981
The Gulf Cooperation Council was founded in Abu Dhabi on 25th May 1981. The members were U.A.E. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain.
H.H.Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was elected as the UAE President after the death of UAE Founder H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan 3rd Nov 2004
Following the death of H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, his son, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan became the ruler of Abu Dhabi and was then elected as president of the UAE by the Supreme Council.
H.H.Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum became the Ruler of Dubai, was elected as UAE Vice President, and nominated as the Prime Minister. Jan 2006
H.H.Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum became ruler of Dubai on 4th January 2006 and the following day, the Federal National Council chose him to be the vice president of the UAE. The following month, he was appointed as prime minister by the president.
Burj Khalifa opened 4th January 2010
Construction of the Burj Khalifa began in 2004 and opened in 2010 as a key feature in Downtown Dubai. It is the tallest structure in the world.
Hazza Al Mansouri embarked on the UAE's first scientific mission to the International Space Station 25th Sep 2019
Hazza Al Mansouri became the first person from the Arab region to reach the International Space Station. During his historic eight-day mission in 2019, he conducted numerous scientific experiments and filmed the first Arabic-language tour of the ISS.
The Hope Probe successfully entered Mars' orbit 9th February 2021
The Hope probe was the first spacecraft from an Arab country to reach Mars and it successfully entered Mars' orbit on its first attempt. It is designed to gather information about Mars' atmosphere and weather.
Dubai hosted World Expo October 2021 - March 2022
Dubai hosted 192 countries to showcase their innovations and achievements under the theme "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future" in an event that lasted several months and attracted over 24 million visitors.
Museum of the Future opened 22nd Feb 2022
The Museum of the Future is an interactive museum showcasing futuristic ideas about how technology and innovation can address humanity's challenges. Its main attraction is an immersive experience that transports visitors to the year 2071, exploring potential futures in space travel, bioengineering, and health.
H.H.Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was elected as the UAE president after the death of
H.H.Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan 14th May 2022
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan became ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the U.A.E. after the death of his brother, Sheikh Khalifa.
UAE hosted UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) November - December 2023
The 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference was held in Expo City Dubai. An agreement was reached that all countries should try to move away from all types of fossil fuels.
